Did you know...?
Test Now Available to Detect Synthetic Cannabinoids Found in “Fake Pot”
New testing has been developed to detect JWH-018 and JWH-073 (the additives found in various herbal products such as K2, K3, Spice and other "fake pot" products that mimic the effects of marijuana).
K2 and its variations are sold as packets of incense or potpourri at convenience stores, herbal and spiritual shops and online. Although these products are marketed as “incense- not for human consumption” they are commonly smoked for the psychoactive properties associated with the synthetic cannabinoids. The packets have become popular as a legal alternative to marijuana among young adults. Users report perceived effects similar to marijuana, but with a shorter duration of action. Once consumed, these compounds are rapidly metabolized in the body and excreted in the urine as a series of related metabolites.
The DEA used its emergency powers on December 1, 2010 to ban K2 and other "fake pot" products that mimic the effects of marijuana. The DEA has identified the compounds found in these products as ‘Drugs and Chemicals of Concern”. The action by the Drug Enforcement Administration makes it illegal to possess or sell the five chemicals used to make the "fake pot" products for at least one year. As with any drug illegalized users still find ways to purchase and use the product.
New testing has been developed capable of detecting the recent use of JWH-018 and JWH-073. The procedure utilizes advanced, state of the art forensic technology, high performance liquid chromatography coupled to linear ion trap tandem mass spectrometry. In other words, standard drug testing panels do not have the ability to detect K2 and similar products but the new methodology does. The methodology detects and positively identifies the presence of metabolites of JWH-018 and JWH-073 in urine.
The significance of this to employers is the health and safety concerns associated with use of “fake pot”. These synthetic cannabinoids are dangerous because usage of such products may cause negative effects such as vomiting, rapid heart rate, dangerously high blood pressure, increased agitation and sometimes hallucinations or paranoia and even seizures. The products have been popular among those trying to avoid detection during random drug testing. Until now users were able to escape detection of K2 and similar products.
OHS-COMPCARE has partnered with a lab to provide this new test to employers. To learn more contact our Client Services Team at (816) 561-2105 option 1 or by e-mail at customerservice@ohscompcare.com.
