H1N1 Flu and the Holidays
As families gather over the holiday to spread cheer, germs will also be shared resulting in a possible increase in influenza or other infectious disease activities. While the number of cases of H1N1 flu has decreased the past few weeks it is still at record levels for this time of year and caution should be exercised. According to the CDC and other sources it is very likely there will be a 3rd wave with this pandemic. Prevention during this holiday season will be important.
The CDC is recommending four basic steps that everybody can take to be healthy this holiday season.
· Travel well. That means travel only when you are well.
· Wash your hands often. That can be with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
· Cover your cough and sneeze with tissues or with your sleeve.
· Get vaccinated, particularly if you're in a targeted population. Upwards to 40 million Americans have received the H1N1 vaccine. The vaccine has shown to be extremely effective in protecting against disease.
Adult Quick Care now has the H1N1 vaccine at all of our Kansas City area locations as well as our St. Joseph location (See Below for Locations and Contact Numbers). The targeted priority groups for vaccination include: Pregnant women; Persons who live with or provide care for infants less than six months of age (parents, siblings, daycare providers, etc.); Healthcare and emergency services personnel (EMTs, paramedics); Persons six months through 24 years of age; Persons 25 through 64 who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for influenza-related complications (this group includes people with chronic health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, conditions of the kidney, heart, lung, or liver, immune disorder, or obesity). While persons in the five priority groups are the target population, the CDC recommends not turning away persons outside these groups actively seeking vaccination. Adult Quick Care will follow this recommendation as long as vaccine is available in our facilities and high risk groups have been given the opportunity for vaccination.
For seasonal flu vaccine please check with your primary care physician or local health department. For a listing of local health departments visit the Prepare Metro KC website at: http://www.preparemetrokc.org/Get_Help/publichealth.asp.
By practicing prevention, we hope everyone can enjoy the holidays and enjoy getting together. There's a long flu season ahead with frequent travel and lots of people coming together, we might see an increase in disease and we want everybody to take the steps they can to try to prevent that.
