Did you know...?
Simple, everyday actions at work can help save the Environment
The word “Green” has become synonymous for everything that is good for the environment. But, how can your workplace help save the environment? At the core of the “Green” movement is a philosophy of reducing waste and minimizing human impact on our world. With the average American worker spending almost eight hours a day at their place of employment, the workplace offers a unique opportunity for people to make a significant impact in the fight against climate change.
Here are some simple ways to improve the impact your workplace has on the environment (some of these are good safety tips for the workplace too!):
Give it a rest. Use appliances with the ENERGY STAR® label and power-saving modes on computers and monitors.
Unplug it. Unplug appliances and electronics when they are not in use.
Light up. Replace incandescent light bulbs with ENERGY STAR qualified fluorescent bulbs, turn off the lights when you leave a room, or add occupancy sensors in rooms that are not occupied constantly.
Remove excess lights. Many buildings have more lighting then needed. In some areas, half the light may be sufficient. Don’t sacrifice safety though. Hallways and stairwells need to be well lit to help prevent slips and falls.
Install separate switches for smaller areas. Have an electrician rewire lights into smaller groups on independent switches.
Keep the heating and cooling to a minimum. Request the heat set at 65º F and the air conditioning at 76º F, and use a programmable thermostat to set back the temperature for nights, weekends, and holidays.
Let it flow. Keep air vents clear of equipment, paper, files, and supplies.
Inspect heating and cooling (HVAC) systems. Schedule an annual, pre-season maintenance checkup with a licensed contractor to ensure your cooling system is operating efficiently and safely. Be sure to clean or change your system’s air filter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Fax and copy only when really necessary. Set printers and copiers to print double sided when possible. Keep a box for paper that has only been used on one side.
Open freight doors only when needed. As soon as a delivery is complete, close the doors to conserve energy.
Turn off elevators. On the weekend, in the evening or during holidays, turn off extra elevators for annual savings.
Team up. Create a Green Team to build support for energy efficiency in your workplace and reduce waste.
