Did you know...?
Whole Body Vibration (WBV) may contribute to both short and long term health effects ranging from muscle fatigue to low back pain and even degenerative disorders of the spine. WBV often affects workers in the construction, agriculture, transportation, and aviation industries. It can be difficult to distinguish the effects of WBV at work, and other related risk factors, such as personal body mechanics, age, general fitness, body type, previous low back pain, personal activities, past work activities, etc. In addition, the research has not produced a clear dose-response relationship so when a work related injury is alleged, a careful and thorough history must be taken to determine the true exposure at the work place as well as the individual's personal and occupational history.
The employer can assist the occupational physician by providing insight to such aspects of the job as to the time the worker is legitimately exposed to sources of WBV each day. Is the exposure constant or intermittent? What other activities does the worker engage in during work such as lifting, pushing, pulling etc.? It is also helpful if the occupational physician can tour the work site to both better understand the work tasks and to help the employer identify sources of health risks.
The best approach is to proactively reduce, where possible, WBV which does help limit the risks and keep the employee safe and productive. WBV can be reduced by such measures as:
· Seat and floor designs that dampen the transmission of vibration.
· Replacement of old or worn equipment.
· Identify where possible ways to isolate the source of the vibration.
· Encourage workers to not jump from vehicles to the ground (also reduces overall risk of injury).
· Provide personal protective equipment for dampening vibration.
