Traffic Fatalities for 2009 Reach Record Low


Calendar Year 2009 Traffic Fatalities Continue Record Downward Trend

 

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced that the number of overall traffic fatalities reported at the end of 2009 reached the lowest level since 1954, declining for the 15th consecutive quarter.  The projected fatality data for 2009 places the highway death count at 33,963, a drop of 8.9 percent as compared to the 37,261 deaths reported in 2008.  The fatality rate for 2009 declined to the lowest on record, to 1.16 fatalities per 100 million Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) down from 1.25 fatalities per 100 million VMT in 2008.

 

 

 

Most common contributing factors for fatality accidents in KS include Inattention, Driving Too Fast for Conditions, Speed (exceeding posted speed limit), and Driving While Physically Impaired.  69.4% of fatality victims were not wearing their seat belt!

 

Most common contributing factors for fatality accidents in MO include Alcohol/Drugs/Physical Impairment; Inattention; Driving Too Fast For Conditions; Speed (exceeding posted speed limit); the hour of 6-7pm was the hour with the highest percentage of fatal crashes.  Friday and Saturday had the highest percentage of fatal crashes with Friday having the highest totals.  489 of fatalities were occupants not wearing seat belt!  135 fatality crashes involved commercial motor vehicles.

 

There is significant danger to an employer if an employee is involved in an accident while traveling related to the employer’s business or the employee’s job (not only workers’ compensation claims but also liability lawsuits from anyone injured by those employees).  In addition to requiring employees to wear their seat belt while driving on company time, employers are encouraged to consider the related laws in all states in which they operate and to institute policies to address the safety hazards associated with text and cell phone usage and other distractions while driving.  Even in states that do not yet have legislation, employers should consider a company safety policy that mirrors the new laws and update their employee handbooks accordingly. 

 

While it is good news that the fatality rates are dropping, “common sense” and staying alert and concentrating on driving, remain the best preventive measures to keep employees safe while driving.
