Did you know...?
Worksite Health Promotion Programs offer employees the opportunity to learn and practice healthy behaviors and to integrate health promotion and disease prevention activities into all aspects of their life.
Cost analysis of health promotion programs show that 20% of the employees generate 80% of the costs and 80% of the employees generate 20% of the costs.
Are Health Promotion Programs worth it?
· 50% of individuals in low risk category move to moderate or high risk category each year (increasing cost to employers each year)
· Body mass index (BMI) is increasing at a much more rapid rate in younger generations than older generations
· Today’s generation of children may be the first to not outlive their parents due to consequences of obesity and related diseases
· The severely obese group is increasing at a faster rate than any other weight/health group
· 1/5th of health care expenditures go towards treating the consequences of obesity
· Rising disability rates are due to obesity
Lifestyle behaviors are formed early in life and increasingly difficult to change as one ages. Individuals spend the majority of their waking hours at work. The workplace is an opportunity to introduce healthy choices into an individual’s life.
Goals of Worksite Health Promotion Program include:
· year 1 - good experience for the employee (so they will continue with intervention program)
· year 2 - actual health improvement in employees
· year 3 - visible return of investment (ROI) on program
The statistics vary but show that a Worksite Health Promotion Program can reap a ROI from 3.5:1 to 6:1 (and up to 22:1 if indirect costs/benefits are also included).
Employees and Employers both win when Health Promotion Programs can be integrated into the workplace.
