June 6-12 is National Headache Awareness Week
The goal of National Headache Awareness Week is to:
Less than one-third of adults engage in the recommended amount of physical activity (at least 30-60 minutes most days), according to the Surgeon General, but regular physical activity is extremely helpful for the prevention of obesity, and very important for achieving and maintaining weight loss. In addition to weight control, physical activity can help reduce headaches, prevent heart disease, help control cholesterol levels and diabetes, slow bone loss associated with advancing age, lower the risk of certain cancers, and help reduce anxiety and depression.
Here are some tips from the Surgeon General on how to integrate exercise into weight reduction plans*:
·
Make fitness a priority…commit to it!
* Source “Overweight and Obesity: What You Can Do.” Be sure to consult
with your healthcare provider before starting an exercise regimen.
The basic understanding of headache involves much more than an awareness of pain:
With origins in neuro-biology, headaches are complicated and can emerge from one or a combination of factors that can be genetic or environmental, result from stress or anxiety, or jump-started by diet and lifestyle. While over-the-counter medications can be effective for the occasional headache, people who are affected daily, or those limited or debilitated by severe headaches, should seek diagnosis and treatment from a qualified healthcare provider. Correct identification of the type or types of headache is the first step toward effective treatment.
