Did you know...?

A report by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) finds that most work absences for physical conditions can be avoided, and that disability brings devastating psychological, medical, social and economic effects to the individuals involved.

Returning the injured worker to full work is like returning the athlete to full competition.  Studies show that the longer an injured worker is off work, the less likely he or she is to ever completely return to work, thus early, effective intervention is critical to preventing long term disability.  All musculoskeletal injuries require some physical rehabilitation but most injured workers can be adequately rehabilitated through progressive return to their normal physical activities of daily living including work.  Such minor musculoskeletal injuries generally resolve within the first two to four days.  Past this point, complete recovery is often dependent upon the integration of a formal physical rehabilitation program.  Studies show that the effectiveness of physical rehabilitation diminishes proportionately when not initiated within the ideal time from initial injury which is generally prior to ten days.

Rehabilitation should use objective measurements to quantify the initial physical deficiencies and progress towards the return to work goals.  The workers’ ability to perform the job activities, range of motion, and strength should be measured objectively and used to manage the treatment and document the outcome.
