Did you know...?
Gaining too much weight can be as bad for an employer's bottom line as it is for a person's waistline. Start! Walking At Work Day is one way employees can decrease their weight and waistline.
A Duke University Medical Center analysis found that obese workers filed twice the number of workers' compensation claims; had seven times higher medical costs from those claims and lost 13 times more days of work from work injury or work illness than did non-obese workers.
Workers with higher risk jobs were found to be more likely to file workers' compensation claims, and obese workers in high-risk jobs incurred the highest costs, both economically and medically.
The strong link between obesity and workers' compensation costs indicates that maintaining healthy weight is not only important to workers but should also be a high priority for employers. Work-based programs designed to target healthful eating and physical activity should be developed and then evaluated as part of a strategy to make all workplaces healthier and safer.
Wednesday April 25, 2007 has been proclaimed the national Start! Walking At Work Day. April 25th has been marked as the day that adults nationwide can make the pledge to Start! Walking and to become active and heart-healthy especially in the workplace. Walking at work is just one way to help employees’ combat obesity.
These days adults are spending more time at work than ever before, with little time spent being active. Start! Walking At Work day was created to remind employees to take a time-out from their daily schedule and find just a little time for their health. Taking just 10 minutes three times a day to walk will help you live longer. In fact, studies show that just one hour of vigorous exercise will increase your life expectancy by two hours. It makes sense to Walk More and Eat Well to Live Longer and Healthier.
