Did you know...?
Aquatic Physical Therapy…Not Just a Day at the Pool!
When you think about going to the pool most peoples first thought is of summer fun and the city pool. There may be some familiarity with the concept of exercising in a pool, but for most people that is limited to geriatric patients or arthritis programs at the local YMCA or community center. However, aquatic physical therapy can often be an important component of a sports medicine rehabilitation approach and in the worker’s compensation setting “the industrial athlete” may benefit from this resource as well.
Who benefits?
· Post surgical rehabilitation patients with well healed surgical incisions, particularly those who have weight bearing restrictions.
· Patients with musculoskeletal injuries who are obese and may be aided by the buoyancy of the water.
· Patients with generalized acute pain who have difficulty tolerating “land based” exercise programs.
Exercising in the pool has several key clinical components:
· The buoyancy of the water decreases weight bearing on the joints in the legs and decompresses all of the joints of the body. This allows for working on movement patterns and biomechanics much earlier in patients who have weight bearing restrictions.
· Strengthening activities can be performed earlier because of the assistance the water’s buoyancy provides and the gentle resistance water provides when you move a submerged body part.
· Gentle hydrostatic pressure while in water minimizes swelling during exercise.
· Higher level balance and coordination activities can be done on patients with weight bearing restrictions.
