Did you know...?
K2 mirrors marijuana
There has been a recent increase in the popularity of a new street drug called K2 due to word of mouth from users. Despite its possible negative health problems, K2 is an extremely popular drug and is being used as a legal replacement for marijuana across the country.
According to Quest Diagnostics, K-2 is an herbal blend, most likely spiked with a synthetic compound that shares some structural similarities to cannabinoids. However, the DEA does not consider it to be a "synthetic cannabinoid" and, therefore, it is not illegal at this time. Also, as such, it would not be detected in any of the standard tests for "drugs of abuse".
K2 is easy to get. According to an anonymous source “The fact that we can just walk into a store and buy it is what makes it so cool.” The drug itself looks like a spice that could be found in a household kitchen and it smells like common incense. Users say it produces less harsh smoke and it has an immediate effect. Also, it does not produce a distinctive smell, so it can practically be smoked anywhere. Another factor of its popularity is that it contains no THC, therefore those who smoke it can still pass most drug tests.
K2 raises a number of health questions due to the fact that no one really knows what the contents of the drug are. Research shows that natural cannaboids in marijuana are the compounds that release an extra amount of the chemical dopamine into the brain causing a sensation of euphoria. This is what users refer to as ‘getting high.’ Cannaboids are also present in K2, but they are not natural. The chemical compounds that get you ‘high’ in K2 are synthetic canniboids. Synthetic means these chemicals are fabricated and not organic. They are only imitators and could have more dangerous health risks than natural cannaboids in marijuana.
Synthetic canniboids have been developed over the past 40 years as therapeutic agents for the treatment of pain.
More information about K2 and what impact it might have on the workplace will be provided as it becomes available.
