There are an estimated 1.7 million Americans over age 50 addicted to drugs. That estimate could climb as high as 4.4 million by the year 2020. A lifetime of addiction can also mean a lifetime of neglect of overall health. Lifelong drug addiction presents health problems commonly seen in older adults at a younger age. Undiagnosed diabetes, heart disease, liver disease, and hypertension are just a few of the many health problems lifelong addicts are facing. American employers are already being presented with the challenge of an older workforce. The reduced body mass, slower metabolism, less efficient kidneys and liver of the older adult result in the same quantity of drug to hit harder and stay in the body longer, doing more damage. The cognitive damage from drug use can result in memory loss, difficulty learning new information, perception disorder, and other emotional problems. The American employer is not only feeling the effects of the cost of medical expenses for the older worker but also the effects of a less productive worker due to lifelong drug addiction.
