TIP OF THE WEEK

                                                                               January 31, 2007

Did you know...?

Friday February 2, 2007 is National Wear Red Day.

National Wear Red Day is a day when millions of Americans nationwide will wear red to show their support for women's heart disease awareness.

The Statistics on heart disease affecting women are alarming:

Ö              Coronary Heart Disease (CVD) is the #1 killer of women ages 25 and over

Ö           1 in 2.6 deaths among women are from CVD compared to 1 in 30 deaths from Breast Cancer

Ö              480,000 women die a year from Cardiovascular Diseases

Ö              Only 13% of women are aware that heart disease is their number one health threat

Ö              64% of women who die suddenly of Coronary Heart Disease had no previous symptoms of disease

Women & Heart Disease The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and other partner organizations.   The campaign launched the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wakeup call to American women.

Join the national awareness movement by wearing red on February 2, and encourage your family, friends, and coworkers to do the same.  Anyone can participate by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, tie, or Red Dress Pin.

The good news is that both men and women can lower their risk of heart disease by as much as 82 % by leading a healthy lifestyle.  Tips for leading a healthy lifestyle include:

Ö              Exercise Regularly

Ö              Maintain a healthy weight

Ö              Eat a sensible diet – watch fat, sodium and sugar intake

Ö              Don’t Smoke or Quit if you are currently a Smoker

Ö              Get regular checkups so that you know and understand your blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels
