Did you know...?
Sleep apnea is a treatable disorder in which a person stops breathing during sleep, often hundreds of times during the night. Sleep apnea is very common, affecting as many as twelve million Americans. Risk factors include being male, overweight, and over the age of forty, but sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age. Untreated sleep apnea may be responsible for medical problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, memory problems, weight gain and headaches. Untreated sleep apnea may also cause job impairment and motor vehicle crashes. More fatality car accidents are attributed to falling asleep behind the wheel or sleepiness than to other causes. The number of sleep-related crashes due to untreated sleep apnea is not known. Fortunately, sleep apnea can be diagnosed and treated. Several treatment options exist, and research into additional options is ongoing.
